Internet Marketing can be an extremely lucrative method of earning a living.
If you want to learn how to make money online and start a work from home business, pay close attention, because as you read this entire article you’ll have a tremendous advantage over your competitors.
What Is Internet Marketing?
Internet Marketing and Online Advertising are actually one and the same. It’s simply a form of marketing and advertising through the utilization of the internet, to deliver promotional material or messages to consumers.
When someone tells you, “I’m an internet marketer” – that’s a very broad based term that could fall under many categories, as internet marketing has many “sub-niches” that fall under its large umbrella.
Sub Niches in Internet Marketing
Online Marketing is such a complex subject, it’s important that you understand how this works before we break down the sub-niches.
When it comes to online advertising there are really only two ways to market – free advertising and paid advertising. Of course, the sub-niches (when accurately described) will fall under 1 of these 2 categories.
Examples Of Paid Advertising:
- PPC (Pay-Per-Click)
- Banner Advertising
- CPA – Cost Per Acquisition
- PPV (Pay-Per-View)
- Email Marketing
- Display Ads
- Search Engine Marketing
You might not believe this, but there are actually many more paid marketing methods, but this was just to name a few.
Now let’s talk about free advertising.
Examples of Free Advertising:
- Blogging
- Social Media Marketing
- Video Marketing
- Free Online Classifieds
- Email Signatures
- Forum Marketing
- Article Marketing
- Search Engine Optimization
Again, these are just a few of many methods you can use to do free internet marketing.
It’s important to understand that some of the methods mentioned here are overlapping, meaning they can be used with free and paid advertising.
A great example of this would be Social Media Marketing. You can use Facebook as an example – many people use their Facebook profiles to promote their businesses etc. Unfortunately, Facebook limits the amount of people who see promotional content on their free platform to a minimum.
It works, but it’s impossible to scale. If you want to build a business that you can scale on social media (particularly Facebook) you have to use their paid advertising platform.
There’s no limit to how far you can scale your business once you find a winning ad, you can then begin to throw more money at it and scale it to the moon!
Content Marketing Strategy
A common strategy internet marketers use when they do not have pockets deep enough for paid ads is content marketing. Once again, content marketing (like many other facets of internet marketing) has many sub-niches – (and also has both free and paid forms).
Free Content Marketing Strategies
Another important distinction to make about internet marketing, before you learn more about free content marketing methods, is something you’ll want to remember – free methods take longer to get results.
So if you have lots of time on your hands and little money, you’ll want to go with free content marketing. If you have little time on your hands and lots of money, you’ll fare well with paid advertising instead.
Blogging
A great way to build an online business for free is through the use of blogging.
You can start a blog for free in minutes and be off to the races, however, I recommend that you invest into your blog and make it look professional.
The little money you will spend on creating a professional looking blog will go a long way to differentiate you from other competing bloggers.
Once your blog is set up, everything that you blog about moving forward will be free of charge.
You could invest into syndication tools to further the reach of your blog posts, but if you have a strong following on social media you really don’t have to worry about spending money to get eyeballs on your blog posts.
Another way to get more views on your blog posts is through the use of email marketing. Every internet marketing professional should have their own email contact list. You’ll learn more about that in a moment.
The greatest thing about a good blog is that it is the central “hub” of your business. No matter how many products and services you may promote, you can house all of them in one central location when you own your own blog.
Video Marketing
When it comes to a surefire method of marketing online for free, video marketing is one of (if not) the best.
It has been estimated that over 300 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute! YouTube allegedly also has over 1.3 billion users.
With that type of traffic, it’s almost detrimental to your business NOT to be taking advantage of YouTube.
The most advantageous thing about it is that you can market your products and services on YouTube absolutely free!
In case you were wondering, yes – YouTube DOES have a paid advertising platform. But, unlike Facebook, YouTube does not limit your reach with their free platform.
The single most important thing to get tons of views and subscribers on your YouTube videos is the quality of the content that you put out.
Different Ways to Market On YouTube
‘How To’ Videos
One way to build a cult-like following of viewers on YouTube is to put out quality stuff. How To Videos are some of the best videos to put out – haven’t you ever gone online and asked Google “how to ______?”
Another fun-fact that you may not know is that YouTube is owned by Google.
So, when you have content posted on YouTube it’s very likely that it just might pop up in a Google Search when someone does a search that you have (intelligently) written into the title of your video.
Screen Sharing Videos
Not everyone is comfortable on the camera – an easy way to appease those types is to introduce them to screen sharing software.
When you share your screen on a video you can teach people how to do something they didn’t know how to do, you can do interactive training videos, and you can also do tutorials of all kinds.
Every serious internet marketing professional should have a screen sharing software of some sort.
The Number One Tool of Internet Marketers
The most important fundamental of internet marketing that any aspiring professional needs to learn early on in their career is the importance of building an email database.
Some call it a Contact Manager, others call them Autoresponders – it doesn’t matter what you call them, the important thing to understand is their importance.
Your email autoresponder is the key to your existence in online advertising. Reason being, it’s your primary method of communication among your tribe – aka, your following.
If your marketing strategy does not consist of capturing the contact information of your visitors you’re doing it all wrong.
Many amateur internet marketers come into the profession with the sole intention of making a sale. In the process they completely miss the fact that 9 out of 10 people never buy anything the first time they see it.
This leaves an enormous amount of potential revenue on the table, due to a lack of understanding on your part – if only you had collected their email!
How to Collect Emails In Your Marketing
The key to list building (collecting emails) is to place a gatekeeper between your visitor and your product/service. Some people call this a “lead magnet.”
A lead magnet is simply an “ethical bribe” to get someone to enter their contact information (usually name and email) into a form found on your page (prior to them being able to see your offer).
In most cases your lead magnet will be a video, maybe an eBook or Cheat Sheet, or maybe a recording to an interview from one of the titans of the industry.
Sometimes you won’t offer a lead magnet at all. You’ll just write a compelling message on your lead capture page and then redirect your visitor directly to whatever it is you’re offering.
Although, it’s typically best to offer something of value in return for their contact information.
Putting It All Together
- Just starting out you need to have an offer in order to get paid with internet marketing.
- Once you’ve identified your offer, you have to learn how to drive traffic to that offer.
- A percentage of the people who land on your website, video, etc. – will opt to enter their contact information to learn more about what you’re offering.
- Those people will then be added to your email marketing database.
Now technology takes over and allows you to email your entire contact list (or specific segments of your list) anytime you want.
Your autoresponder will also let you send out a series of pre-written messages on a drip campaign (follow up campaign) that continues to market your products/services until your contact decides to either buy, or unsubscribe from your receiving your emails.
If you follow the simple steps mapped out for you here today, you will undoubtedly find success with internet marketing regardless of whether you choose to do content marketing or paid advertising.
Feel free to post your comment below. An email address is required but it will not be shared with anyone, put on any list, or used for any kind of marketing, just to alert you if there are any replies. Thanks and happy hunting!

Hi, this was a fantastic and in-depth article on free web marketing possibilities.
I am always interested in new information on this topic and see you know quite a lot about it.
The email marketing is the next strategy I want to concentrate on. I’m still new in the business and don’t know much about this yet.
Would you recommend using a free MailChimp account or a paid GetRespond service?
I know I’ll have to decide using one autoresponder but am not sure which one.
Thanks
I would always start with free wherever possible but I admit, I don’t know anything about MailChimp. If the free version is usable go for that first. Keep in mind though, if you decide to move your account later, importing your addresses into a new provider might be a challenge. I have never done this but do know you can’t just import email addresses into most providers databases. They are worried about spammers adding emails addresses without the owner’s permission. Most providers require double opt-in.
Thanks for the comment Stefan!
Hi, this was a great insight into Internet Marketing, I have always heard about email marketing and autoresponders but never got around to doing it as I am relatively new and have nothing of value to give in return. I see now that it truly is important thanks to your in-depth analysis of it thanks.
It’s something you may consider in the future. It isn’t terribly important early on, instead, focus on building a site of value. After you have some traffic and followers, you might consider branching into email marketing.
Thanks for the input Levon!
You’ve written an informative post here that breaks down and sums up internet marketing in a very easy to understand fashion. I’ve been looking into getting started with something online, and your article has helped things to make more sense.
It sounds like there’s a lot to this internet marketing stuff, but I’m willing to learn if I can find the right platform. You mention Wealthy Affiliate as the way to go. Is this the best platform out there? Does it teach you everything?
Yes. Wealthy Affiliate is the best all-in-one program I have ever run across. It includes everything you need to be successful at content marketing and I highly recommend you look into it further. Once you understand the nuts and bolts of online marketing, it isn’t that complex, you just need the right education. Best of luck!
Thanks Darren!

Hi Steven,
It is a very comprehensive information about online marketing. There are indeed many ways to make money!
You had laid out a lot of free advertising examples which are very helpful! But I have never heard of “email signature”. What is this advertisement about, and how to go about it?
Thank you again for the great insight.
Kyoko
In the configuration of your email client there should be a field for a signature. This text will appear at the end of every email you send. Put your company name, maybe a short description and a link to your website. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the comment Kyoko!
